Can adaptogens help with peri-menopause symptoms?

What are they?
Plant compounds like mushrooms or herbs. Some work specifically on the stress and hormonal systems and have been well tested as they've been around for thousands of years. They're not just Voodoo medicine!

What can they do?
They can calm you down, or pep you up or remove some of the brain fog you might suffer from. They can moderate some of the flux - like calming cortisol down a bit. They attach to the receptors in the body where your old hormones used to but have deserted you!

Ones to try
Ashwagandha: relaxation & anti-anxiety
Schisandra: brain focus
Rhodiola: peps you up in the afternoon

Now, just because they're natural doesn't mean you should start popping pills left, right and centre, especially if you're on medication. Ask a Registered Dietician and do some more research.

Here’s a great
podcast which talks about them, at 19 minutes in. The page also has a link to an info sheet with lots more info on what each one is for and when to take it and how much.

Naturisimo has a good selection of adaptogens to buy and a blog piece with a bit of detail.
